Aylward Gypsy Rose 5th, born in 2011, soon became a favourite on her owners’ David and Margaret Rutherford’s farm, after winning the title of Champion Calf at the East of England Festival Calf Show. Her first calving was successful, but her next calf in 2017 was born dead weighing in at a whopping 115 kg. She prolapsed and was down for 10 days before finally making a recovery. With doubts over whether she would get in calf again the Rutherfords decided to have her flushed by Peter May, with the hope of generating some offspring from her.
2 weeks ago we carried out Ovum Pick-up and IVF on a Limousin cow. We froze an incredible 14 grade 1's and 2 grade 2's from this donor.
George Borland from Ayrshire was delighted with the OPU results from his 3 donor cows, GlenvalleyBreakout Talulah, Kepcilloch Talent Summer 3 and Newabbey Shout Dellia, which yielded a total of 16 embryos between them.
George was keen to retain the genetics from these 3 donors and was not disappointed with the results! He made use of the Activf-ET voucher scheme launched at the Semex Conference in January to try out IVF for the first time. He hopes to transfer the embryos into recipients in the autumn.
Two calves, Trueman Madonna and Trueman Minogue, produced from IVP embryos were successful at Balmoral Show in May 2017.
They are featured in this report on the British Limousin Cattle Society facebook page.
" Class 2 - Heifer born or between 1st January and 31st March 2016
News from Crossfell Holsteins, Cumbria
"2 exciting heifer calves born in the last 24hrs. 1 is from a genetic recovery and the other is the first live calf born in the U.K and maybe even Europe that has been biopsied as a embryo to see what her genomics results are. Both calves are thanks to Paragon Advanced Breeding".
